Amorim’s dismissal on Monday ended a brief but rigid tactical experiment, one defined by unwavering commitment to a 3-4-2-1 system. Fletcher inherits a squad conditioned to that structure, yet he arrives with his own ideas and an acute awareness that this is an audition as much as an assignment. Defensive structure under scrutiny

Midfield choices reflect caution

Midfield selection hints at Fletcher’s instincts. He confirmed that Mason Mount and Bruno Fernandes are fit again after injury, a significant boost. Amorim leaned heavily on a Casemiro Fernandes double pivot, but Fletcher may opt for greater security.

That could see Casemiro continue alongside Manuel Ugarte, offering steel and positional discipline, while Fernandes is restored to a more advanced No10 role. It is a configuration designed to steady rather than dazzle, particularly away from home.

Wide areas present another challenge. Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo remain absent at the Africa Cup of Nations, thinning options. Matheus Cunha could shift to the left, with Mount deployed on the right. Patrick Dorgu impressed there against Newcastle in Amorim’s 4-2-3-1, yet the return of Mount, an England international eager to reassert himself, may tilt the balance.

Familiar lead line expected

Up front, continuity again seems likely. Joshua Zirkzee has made an impact from the bench, notably providing the assist for Cunha’s equaliser at Elland Road, but it would be a surprise if he displaced Benjamin Sesko for this fixture. Sesko offers presence and reference point, qualities valuable in a tight away game.
