On nine minutes, Dominique Janssen fired a free kick wide of the post and the scores stayed level. Next it was Jess Park’s turn, but her curling effort was tipped wide of the post as Marc Skinner’s side piled on the pressure.

After 25 minutes, Hinata Miyazawa crashed a fierce drive against the crossbar when left in acres of space.

Massively against the run of play, Tottenham Hotspur found the opener through Bethany England. Amanda Nilden picked up the ball and dinked a cross into the box for England, who headed past Phallon Tullis-Joyce.

United almost responded after 40 minutes, when a shot from Malard crashed off the crossbar once again.

Incredibly, just one minute later, United found the post again as Tottenham Hotspur’s goal lived a charmed life. Maya Le Tissier smashed a header off the post.

Amazingly, Tottenham Hotspur went up the other end and scored their second in spite of incredible pressure from the hosts.

Eveliina Summanen headed in from an Ashleigh Neville cross to shock the home crowd.

Second half

United continued to push in the second half but their terrible luck continued as the visitors somehow found themselves 3-0 up after the hour mark.

Olivia Holdt slid the ball across to Martha Thomas, who made no mistake against her former side. 3-0. United looked down and out.

Nonetheless, this side has something special about them and never know when they are beaten. After 74 minutes, Malard’s acrobatic effort was cleared but landed to Ella Toone, who expertly hooked the ball into the net to give the home crowd hope.

Just four minutes later, the hosts hit the crossbar for the fourth time in the match, as Toone smashed a close-range effort against the woodwork. After 82 minutes, Fridolina Rolfo fired home United’s second of the game after Malard and Park had failed to convert their chances.

Malard almost grabbed an incredible equaliser but her effort was cleared off the line by Molly Bartrip. The game ticked into added time and it looked like United’s brave fight would be in vain.

Luckily, Rolfo had other ideas and she tapped in the hosts’ third with seconds left in the match.

The full-time whistle blew and United dropped to fourth in the table. Nonetheless, Skinner will be delighted with the amazing fight demonstrated by his team ahead of Champions League and League Cup action before the Christmas break.
