Man Utd star’s performance in win over Chelsea ‘the best he has played’ says Carrick | OneFootball

Michael Carrick says Kobbie Mainoo’s performance against Chelsea was the best he has played under him.

Mainoo recovered from injury to start against Chelsea as Matheus Cunha scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win.

“I think that was the best Kobbie has played, certainly since I’ve been back here,” Carrick said.

“I think to step up with so many sides to his game tonight, I thought he looked so composed, so calm, had a real good presence about him, defended well. It’s not easy when you’ve got really good players against you, the battle with him and Cole Palmer.

“He had to be right at it tonight but he showed so much quality and composure in a tough environment to show us what he can do.

“He didn’t train an awful lot really, he only did a little bit on Thursday and a little bit more yesterday so it wasn’t a lot. Again, credit to him for stepping in.”

Carrick also hailed makeshift central defensive duo Ayden Heaven and Noussair Mazraoui for stepping up in the absence of four key players in Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire, Mathjis de Ligt and Leny Yoro.

“The boys took it on so well and I love when you see players thrive in those moments when sometimes it’s challenging.” the United boss said.

“That’s a tough place to come into a game like that and I thought he took it in his stride so well.”
