The signing of two potential new midfield names at Manchester City could be significantly boosted by one particular name succeeding Pep Guardiola at the club.

The Catalan coach is approaching the expiry of his current Etihad Stadium agreement, with his two-year deal penned in the Autumn of the 2022/23 season coming to an end at the conclusion of the ongoing campaign.

From the side of Manchester City, those within the club have a clear intention and hope to extend Guardiola’s deal further, but are respectful of the time it requires for the manager to make a decision and whether to make it 10 seasons in charge at the Etihad.

Whilst formulating a new contractual proposal for the head coach, there is also planning being put in place at the club to decide upon who could be their new manager beyond Guardiola, and who would be best-suited to take on such a mammoth task upon his exit.

With recent links to the likes of Sporting CP’s Ruben Amorim and Girona’s Michel, a new report has pointed elsewhere as to whom Manchester City believe would be the best possible successor to Guardiola at the club.

According to the information of Football Transfers’ Steve Kay, there are those at Manchester City that believe the arrival of Xabi Alonso as their next head coach would help them sign both Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz and Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi.

As for the future of existing midfield superstar Kevin De Bruyne, it is explained that the Belgian is leaning towards a one-year contract extension at the Etihad Stadium with his current deal expiring at the end of the current season.

De Bruyne is currently in the exact same situation as his manager at the club, and while Manchester City would want to avoid a scenario that sees both men and Txiki Begiristain leave at the same time, there has been no progress with regards to possible extensions.

The 33-year-old midfielder has most recently been focussing on his own fitness and return from injury, having sustained a groin problem against Inter Milan last month that has since left him sidelined for a matter of weeks.

De Bruyne returned to Manchester City training last week and there is a belief that he could play some involvement in the club’s home clash against Southampton in the Premier League next weekend.
