Real Madrid’s search for defensive reinforcements appears far from over despite already making significant additions at the back. 

In fact, incoming manager Jose Mourinho remains determined to further strengthen his defensive unit and has identified two names capable of fitting his tactical plans for the coming season.

The Portuguese manager is understood to be looking for defenders who can offer versatility and help the team switch seamlessly between different defensive systems during matches. 

While Florentino Perez has already secured the arrivals of Ibrahima Konate and Denzel Dumfries, Mourinho believes another defensive signing could still be necessary.

Gvardiol emerges as Mourinho’s preferred option

One of the names attracting serious attention is Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol. 

The Croatian international has been linked with Real Madrid before, but the latest developments suggest there may now be encouragement from the player’s side.

As reported by AS, Gvardiol would be interested in receiving an offer from Real Madrid and is attracted by the possibility of working under Mourinho. 

However, completing such a transfer remains extremely complicated.

It must be noted that the defender is tied to Manchester City until 2028, giving the Premier League club a strong negotiating position.

Even so, recent circumstances have created some uncertainty around his future. 

What’s the story?

A serious tibia fracture disrupted much of his 2025/26 campaign, restricting him to only 18 Premier League appearances and five matches in the Champions League.

The report claims that City are aware of growing interest in the defender and have already attempted to secure his long-term future with a contract renewal proposal. 

Nevertheless, the player is said to be paying close attention to Real Madrid’s interest, as he is particularly interested in playing under Mourinho.
