Manchester City will be hoping they do not replicate the poor campaign they had last season. If City want to win back the Premier League, then they need Rodri to perform at his best. But it will take time for Manchester City’s midfield general to find his best form and full fitness after suffering an ACL injury last season.
Pep Guardiola’s side is currently undefeated in seven games in all competitions. They have picked up five wins and two draws along the way. These results have produced a decent start in the Champions League and have helped them climb back up the Premier League table. City are currently fifth and sit only three points behind Arsenal in first.
Things are starting to click for Manchester City again. Pep Guardiola needs his team to continue this momentum after the international break. They face Everton today at the Etihad Stadium. If they can beat David Moyes’ side, they’ll extend their unbeaten run to eight matches. They’ll also have significant momentum behind them for the challenges ahead.
Rodri’s only been a bit-part player in Manchester City’s recent unbeaten run. His long-term injury last season was a significant reason the club failed to win any trophies in 2024/25 and finished 13 points behind Premier League winners Liverpool. Rodri is also still feeling the effects of the injury he suffered last season. He will miss City’s match against Everton today due to a knee injury. The Spanish international will need time to get back to full fitness. The hope is that he can be fully fit for the second half or the latter stages of this season.
The Spanish international was injured for 236 days last campaign, and this saw him only play 8 matches for City last season. It was no shock to see Manchester City go from Premier League winners with Rodri in the side to one that massively struggled without him, whilst he was injured.
Erling Haaland has already scored 12 goals in his nine appearances for Man City this season. He looks to be back to his best. Still, Guardiola needs Rodri to also be at his best. A fully fit Rodri adds another dimension to Manchester City’s play. But Spanish midfielder Nico has stepped up in recent matches. If his form holds, Rodri can take his time to get confidence back in his body.
Being able to have one of the best central midfielders in football playing at his best is clearly crucial to Manchester City. Not only does Rodri break up opposition attacks, but he also provides the club with an attacking threat. He has managed to score some very important goals whilst at Man City, like the goal he scored in their 1-0 win in the 2023 Champions League final.
According to betting experts at MyBettingSites, Arsenal are the odds-on favourites to win the Premier League title, with Liverpool second at 11/4, and Manchester City the 4/1 third favourites. Given the current league standings, this is no shock. But the fact that Pep Guardiola’s side isn’t seen as the team to beat could play into their hands.
The pressure to win the title this season is definitely on the Gunners and Liverpool, and this added pressure can benefit Manchester City. They can continue to build momentum in the shadows of their rivals, and be ready to take full advantage of any slip-ups.
Rodri is one of the best central midfielders in Europe, and he can be the catalyst for bringing trophies back to the club when he is fully fit. Winning no trophies last season was a huge failure, and they need to get back to the top as soon as possible to regain their dominance in England. If Pep Guardiola’s side can continue to build momentum while Rodri works his way back to full fitness, they’ll be well placed when one of their most important players finally puts his fitness issues behind him.
