City Football Group – the parent company behind Manchester City – are set to team up with River Plate to secure the signing of one of Argentine football’s best talents.
The Premier League giants and global football business have long been active suitors in the South American football market, and also hold financial investments in clubs within the continent as part of their ongoing global growth.
In the last few years, Manchester City have been treated to some of the most exciting young South American talents to emerge, with Julian Alvarez the best example of a player who has excelled when swapping his home nation for European football.
Following in the footsteps of the FIFA World Cup winner and now-Atletico Madrid superstar has been Claudio Echeverri, who also brought an end to his time with River Plate by joining Manchester City and impressing upon joining the club.
Other examples invested in by City in recent years include Maximo Perrone from Velez Sarsfield – now excelling at Como – as well as Savinho, an investment of the City Group from Atlético Mineiro and developing within the Group before joining Pep Guardiola’s side in 2024.
Now, according to the information of journalist German Garcia Grova, River Plate are targeting Velez Sarsfield’s Maher Carrizo – who is expected to only leave via his release clause of $16 million, and could involve the aid of Manchester City’s ownership.
Having refused to pay the aforementioned amount, City Football Group have reportedly ‘entered the equation’, and could now team up with River Plate to sign the 19-year-old in financing a deal for the teenager before loaning him out to Estadio Monumental.
From the side of the City Group and Manchester City, it is explained that officials are ‘banking on the prospect being developed’ at River Plate thanks to their successful developments of the likes of Julián Álvarez and Claudio Echeverri.
Beyond a loan at River Plate, it remains to be seen what the future holds for Carrizo, should he be invested in by the City Football Group, although the ultimate target will no doubt be to rise into Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City squad.
City have plenty of work to do themselves this summer as they continue to trim their squad and seek out the best solutions for some of their most exciting names with a view towards developing them at senior level.
Among the players that could leave Manchester City this summer with a very high-regard within the club are Claudio Echeverri, most likely on a loan agreement, and James McAtee – who is attracting interest from the Bundesliga over a permanent exit.
