  1. Date: Wednesday, 17 December 2025
  2. Kick-off: 19:30 GMT
  3. Venue: Etihad Stadium, Manchester

Manchester City team news

Both teams will be deprived of their African squad members, with participating players having now left for the Africa Cup of Nations. Omar Marmoush (Egypt) and Rayan Ait-Nouri (Algeria) are both unavailable as a result.

In terms of injuries, John Stones and Mateo Kovacic are ruled out, as is Jeremy Doku. The winger has a leg injury and is expected to miss two to three weeks. Despite a semi-final place being on offer, City are expected to rotate. James Trafford will hope for a rare start in goal.

Brentford team news

Brentford are also impacted by AFCON, with Dango Ouattara and Frank Onyeka heading to the tournament this week. Kevin Schade’s return from suspension is a boost, particularly given Ouattara’s absence.

Elsewhere, Keith Andrews remains without Fabio Carvalho, Antoni Milambo, Josh Dasilva and Reiss Nelson through injury.

Form

Manchester City

Manchester City have found form in recent weeks with five consecutive wins in all competitions. That run includes a 2-1 win at Real Madrid in the Champions League and comfortable 3-0 victories over high-flying Sunderland and Crystal Palace.

Phil Foden’s return to form has inspired their recent results. The England midfielder has scored six goals in his last four Premier League appearances.

Brentford

Keith Andrews has had a solid start at Brentford amid much upheaval in the summer. The Bees are 15th in the Premier League table, but seven points clear of the relegation places. However, a three-game winless run has increased concern, including a flat performance during the weekend draw with Leeds.

Igor Thiago’s goals have been behind Brentford’s success this season. The Brazilian has netted 11 times in the Premier League with only Manchester City striker Erling Haaland having scored more.

Predicted lineups

Manchester City predicted XI: Trafford; Khusanov, Dias, Ake, O’Reilly; Lewis, Reijnders, Silva; Bobb, Savinho; Haaland.

Brentford predicted XI: Kelleher; Kayode, Collins, Van den Berg, Henry; Henderson, Yarmoliuk; Schade, Damsgaard, Lewis-Potter; Thiago.
