After a rare week without a match, Manchester City return to action tonight. City face a crucial Premier League fixture against Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium. This match does feel like a big moment for City given that Arsenal dropped points to Wolves at Molineux. The opportunity is there for City to move within two points of Arsenal, who sit top of the the Premier League, and place huge pressure on Mikel Arteta’s side, who seem to be struggling with the pressure that comes with chasing a Premier League title.
To get three points tonight, Pep Guardiola’s side will have to beat an inconsistent Newcastle side that has come to life recently. Eddie Howe’s side beat Qarabag FK 6-1 in their UEFA Champions League knockout phase first-leg tie this week. Newcastle’s front three of Anthony Elanga, Anthony Gordon, and Harvey Barnes were a handful in the Champions League, and their pace and ability in the final third could create issues for City tonight. Eddie Howe’s side is typically a feisty unit, and they will be no pushovers at the Etihad tonight.
Here is the latest City injury and team news and my predicted City starting eleven ahead of tonight’s match.
Manchester City’s injury situation has improved greatly in recent weeks. Heading into tonight’s match, City only have three players unavailable due to injury. Josko Gvardiol, Mateo Kovacic and Jeremy Doku are all ruled out of tonight’s match. Pep Guardiola told the media yesterday that Doku is unavailable for today’s match.
Savinho is available for selection for tonight’s match. The Brazilian international has been out of action due to injury since Manchester City drew nil-all with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light at the beginning of January. His return does give Pep Guardiola a different attacking option to utilize if the situation arises.
Erling Haaland was substituted at halftime of Manchester City’s 3-0 win over Fulham at the Etihad just over a week ago. Haaland was feeling “uncomfortable” and was taken off as a precaution in that match. Haaland subsequently missed City’s 2-0 win over Salford City last weekend. Pep Guardiola gave the impression yesterday that Haaland is fit and ready to go for tonight’s match.
