Christian Eriksen had fired United ahead in the first half but it was the Dane who was caught with the ball allowing Lammers to level after the break.

Erik ten Hag will rue his side’s lack of urgency in the second half as he had to settle for a point against his old team.

Ten Hag made three changes to the side that drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace on Saturday, bringing Marcus Rashford, Marry Maguire and Manuel Ugarte into the side.

Twente started the brighter of the two teams, with Lammers nearly opening the scoring but dragging his shot wide.

United grew into the game as the first half went on and took the lead when Eriksen curled home after 35 minutes.

The Red Devils were dominating the game and looked comfortable going into the break, but that wasn’t to last.

Lammers - who flopped at Rangers last season - picked Eriksen’s pocket in his own half and squared up to goal, firing home past Andre Onana.

Twente and United both pushed for a winner in an enterating final period of the game, but it ended in a draw which the visitors were delighted with.

The entire Dutch squad celebrated wildly with the travelling fans, who had been in good voice all evening.

There will be more questions asked of Ten Hag after this game, the second successive draw for his side.

United take on Tottenham in a tough-looking Premier League encounter next on Sunday.
