Manchester United are in talks with Tom Heaton over handing him another one-year extension to his deal, according to The Athletic.
The Man United goalkeeper is out of contract at the end of the season, but the Red Devils want him to remain at the Old Trafford club beyond this term.
Heaton has not made an appearance for the first-team this term, with his last competitive game coming in the Carabao Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest in 2023.
However, the 39-year-old Englishman is a valued member of the Man United senior squad due to his experience and eagerness to work with other goalies.
Former Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim named Heaton among the six players who formed the club’s leadership group.
The veteran goalie is in charge of the dressing room affairs along with Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire, Diogo Dalot, Lisandro Martinez, and Noussair Mazraoui.
Man United have been impressed with his impact and would love to extend his deal again as they have done at the end of every season since he joined them.
Heaton has largely been a training goalkeeper with the Red Devils since joining them as a free agent in the summer of 2021 upon his return to the Old Trafford club after 11 years.
He has been behind Senne Lammens and Altay Bayindir in the pecking order this term but continues to provide valuable experience at Carrington and could remain at the club beyond this term.
Wanting to hand him a new deal speaks volumes but it remains to be seen whether Heaton is open to staying given he is likely to attract suitors again in the summer.
The club could be in the market for a new goalkeeper as Bayindir is expected to leave Man United at the end of the season, and holding on to Heaton could be huge going forward.
