Belgium captain arrives after World Cup exit

Manchester United have announced the signing of Youri Tielemans, who arrives at Old Trafford to become the Red Devils’ third summer signing.

The Belgian, who missed his country’s 2-1 defeat in the quarter-finals of the World Cup with a hamstring injury, has joined United from Aston Villa.

The 29-year-old moves to the north west in a £35million deal, signing a five-year contract with Michael Carrick’s side triggered a release clause in his terms at Villa Park.

He moved to the King Power Stadium on an initial loan from Monaco, before spending four years in the east Midlands.

He then made the switch to Villa in 2023, making 134 appearances for the Villans. He scored 10 goals during his time in Birmingham.

Now, he has made the move to United, following Andrey Santos and Karl Darlow through the door.

“It’s hard to describe just how proud I am to join Manchester United,” Tielemans told the club’s website.

“Signing for such a special club feels incredible, it is the culmination of years of dedication since I first fell in love with football.

“I have had the privilege of experiencing success in the game and it has only increased my determination to achieve more. The ambition from everyone at the club is extremely clear; we are all determined to push for the biggest trophies over the coming years.”

United’s director of football Jason Wilcox hailed Tielemans as “one of the most outstanding midfielder in the Premier League”, claiming that the Belgian had “all of the technical qualities, ambition and mentality” to become a success story at Old Trafford.
