Ingrid Stenevik netted the only goal late in the game as the first leg of Manchester United’s third qualifying round tie ended in defeat.
It was almost a perfect start for Manchester United in Norway but Elisabeth Terland was unable to direct a header on target. At the other end, Maya Le Tissier had to be alert to deny Mia Authen from finding the back of the net.
Ella Toone was then denied twice by home keeper Selma Panengstuen, either side of a Terland chance which failed to hit the target.
SK Brann’s biggest danger came in the form of Signe Gaupset and she tested visiting keeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce just before the break.
Melvine Malard went close just after the half-time interval before Dominique Janssen was denied by Panengstuen who was able to gather the ball at the second attempt. Malard then sent another attempt towards goal but a quality finish was lacking.
The deadlock was broken 13 minutes from time. Gaupset’s set-piece delivery was met by Stenevik and she was able to stick the ball in the net.
Toone again went close late on as Manchester United tried to find an equaliser but The Red Devils were unable to make a breakthrough and they have work to do in the second leg.
Manchester United’s second leg tie against SK Brann takes place at Leigh Sports Village next Thursday.
