Tom Heaton will extend his time with Man Utd by a further year

The veteran goalkeeper joined Man United’s youth system in 2002 and made his professional football debut on loan at Swindon in 2005.

Further loan spells with Royal Antwerp, Cardiff, QPR, Rochdale, and Wycombe Wanderers followed before sealing a permanent transfer to Cardiff in 2010.

He then spent time with Bristol City, Burnley and Aston Villa before returning to United in 2021, where he has remained since and has become an integral voice of leadership and experience in the squad.

At 40 years old, there will be questions surrounding the decision to keep Heaton on, who has only made three first team appearances since returning to the club.

However, Man United’s director of football Jason Wilcox said that Heaton’s role extends much beyond making saves on the pitch - acting as a guiding hand for young players and a mentor to new signing Senne Lammens.

“We are delighted that Tom is continuing for another year,” Wilcox said. “Everyone is well aware of the importance of his leadership and professionalism within the group.

“Tom has played a key role in helping to support Senne [Lammens] throughout his first season in the Premier League; his constant dedication and mentality set a fantastic standard for our goalkeeping group.”

Despite his diminished role in the team, Heaton is ecstatic to remain a part of the team and wants hopes to continue to help push the team forward in any capacity.

“It is a huge honour to continue to represent Manchester United,” Heaton explained.

“You can feel the determination and ambition of everyone throughout the club to keep pushing for success. I am really excited to play my role in driving us forward and helping the group to compete for the biggest honours.
