Fernandes is expected to leave the London Stadium club following their relegation. Joining the Red Devils appeals to him, and talks about his wages and transfer fees are ongoing.

West Ham want £85 million to sell the 21-year-old, but United will be eager to reduce the asking price.

Manager Michael Carrick wants the perfect option to replace Casemiro, and Fernandes fits the bill having impressed in the last two seasons in the Premier League.

Real Madrid also have him on their radar, with soon-to-be manager Jose Mourinho a huge admirer.

Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal have also been linked with the West Ham star, but it appears the Red Devils are in the driving seat.

Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson is on Man United’s radar. However, his club want £120m and Manchester City are expected to win the race to sign him.

United have now moved on to other targets, with Fernandes now their top midfield target.

More talks are expected in the coming weeks, but a deal may not be finalised until after the World Cup.

West Ham may also need to lower their asking price, but will hope he impresses at the summer tournament to attract more suitors and a bidding war.
