Manchester United have discovered the fate of promising talent JJ Gabriel after appealing his red card.
Gabriel was given his marching orders in the 52nd minute of the United Under-18s clash against West Brom on Tuesday afternoon.
United beat West Brom 4-3 to advance to the knockout stages of the Premier League Cup, having topped their group with three wins from three.
The game’s most contentious moment arrived when Gabriel became involved in a seemingly innocuous off-the-ball tussle with West Brom midfielder Harry French.
The referee showed the United youngster a straight red card, meaning he would have missed three games, including next week’s FA Youth Cup tie against Oxford United.
Gabriel had registered two assists before he was forced to exit the pitch.
After the final whistle, he took to Instagram to express his dismay at the decision. The 15-year-old shared footage of the incident and questioned, “How can this be a yellow let alone a red, how?”
A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United would appeal against the red card and now, the decision has been confirmed.
The Manchester Evening News report that the red card has been overturned by the FA after a successful appeal by the Red Devils.
Gabriel will now be available for all three games.
Undoubtedly one of the highest-rated starlets currently in United’s academy, it appears to just be a matter of time until Gabriel makes his senior United debut.
He has trained with the first team on several occasions, including under interim head coach Michael Carrick.
