Martinez has not featured for Man United since the 1-1 draw against West Ham as he suffered a small injury ahead of trip to face Everton at Hill Dickinson Stadium at the end of February.

The Argentina international has subsequently missed the last four games, thus affording Leny Yoro an extended run in the team at centre-back alongside Harry Maguire.

In his absence, Man Utd have picked up nine points from a possible 12, rising up to third in the Premier League table as they bid to seal a return to the Champions League for next season.

Carrick, though, will be keen to have Martinez available for selection as soon as possible as United will face fellow top-four hopefuls Chelsea and Liverpool in the run-in.

Man United are next in action on Friday night when they face Bournemouth away from home and Carrick has provided an update on his injured defender.

Speaking on Wednesday afternoon, the Man Utd head coach said: "[Lisandro is] closer, a lot closer. He's getting there, so after this one. I think he'll be alright.”

Carrick has also revealed that Noussair Mazraoui missed training on Wednesday through illness as well as updates on Patrick Dorgu and Matthijs de Ligt.

"It's [a] similar [situation] really [with De Ligt] and frustrating for Matta,” Carrick added.

"He's obviously trying to work to get back but it's just the back issue, really, that's proving difficult. We'll keep working as hard as we can, to get him back as quickly as we can.

“[Dorgu] is a bit further down the line but [Mazraoui] is just ill. He just wasn't feeling too good today."
