Manchester United must heed Edwyn Collins’ wise words

Rip it up and start again. Scottish indie pop band Orange Juice’s top-10 smash from the 1980s is a mantra Manchester United must adopt immediately.

Having lost their grip on the FA Cup yesterday by losing a penalty shoot-out against Fulham, the Red Devils have just the Europa League to play for.

Unless you have money to burn, backing them to lift the trophy wouldn’t be the best idea anyone has ever had. Thankfully, Edwin Collins has a solution.

Drastic times call for drastic measures

The Orange Juice lead singer’s iconic lyric was an ode to moving on. That is exactly what Man United need to do – not in the summer, but now.

If manager Ruben Amorim wasn’t aware before he rocked up at the club, United are a mess. As the old saying goes, drastic times call for drastic measures.

Amorim cannot afford to waste another minute. He must use the rest of the season to establish the foundations for a new era.

That starts with ditching the players who have proved they are not up to the job. Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee would be a good place to start.

Teenager Chido Obi showed more promise in his 52-minute cameo against Fulham than that pair have managed all season. Stick him in the team now.

United have plenty of other promising youngsters in their ranks. They need to be handed the chance to show they can be the future of the club.

There is nothing to be gained from allowing United’s plethora of underperformers to see out the season. Ditch them and start the rebuild as a matter of urgency.
