Man Utd suffer big derby day loss on a disappointing afternoon for summer signing
Manchester United were resoundingly beaten 3-0 by Manchester City as their dismal start to the season continued in chaotic fashion at the Etihad.
Man City took the lead after 18 minutes as Phil Foden headed home after great work from Jeremy Doku, who burst into the area before crossing, at the second attempt, for the England international.
In a game of few chances, City proved ruthlessly efficient and added to their lead with two goals in the space of 15 minutes through Erling Haaland.
The Norwegian striker, who should have had a hat-trick after hitting the post having rounded United ‘keeper Altay Bayindir, latched onto Doku’s deft pass to double City’s lead after 53 minutes before racing clear and finishing confidently with just over 20 minutes to play as City coasted to victory.
This was a morale-boosting victory for City, but yet another chastening afternoon for United, who continue to sink to new lows under Ruben Amorim.
Altay Bayindir 5
Amorim has kept his faith in Bayindir, but the Turkish goalkeeper remains a liability. He twice nearly gifted City possession inside the opening 10 minutes, and he looked shaky whenever the ball was at his feet, with City fans quick to goad him.
Leny Yoro 6
Caught the wrong side of Doku for City’s second, but was unlucky to be substituted midway through the second-half, with his performance by no means the reason United lost.
Mathias De Ligt 5
Should have been punished for a loose pass into midfield, but Haaland somehow hit the post after taking the ball around Bayindir. Lost all composure as City sensed blood.
Luke Shaw 4
A sloppy performance from a player with so much experience. Not strong enough, as Doku burst past him and crossed for Foden to head home, and was loose in possession.

Noussair Mazraoui 6
A big call by Amorim to bring Mazraoui into the side, having only played five minutes, as a substitute against Burnley, this season. The Moroccan responded, though, getting up well in support of Bryan Mbeumo. Again, he was unlucky to see himself substituted as Amorim looked for answers.
Manuel Ugarte 4
Picked over Casemiro, he looked overwhelmed when put under any serious pressure. Offered nothing to suggest he has a long-term future at the club.
Bruno Fernandes (c) 5
Failed to provide the spark United needed in the final third and lost Foden for City’s opener. Some disappointing set-piece deliveries summed up his performance.
Patrick Dorgu 6
Could only watch on as Doku burst past for the opening goal, but he offered a good outlet on the left flank and was sharp and incisive in possession, where many of his team-mates struggled to get the ball out of their feet. Won some useful fouls in dangerous positions.
Amad Diallo 6
A busy performance, popping up all over the pitch in an attempt to affect the game, but lacked quality.
Bryan Mbeumo 6
Saw plenty of the ball, but couldn’t make the most of his opportunities. Came the closest of any United player to scoring as his volley was well saved by Donnarumma and should have converted Diallo’s pull-back from close range.
Benjamin Sesko 4
On his first Premier League start, he was given a rude awakening as Dias bullied him out of the game. The Slovenian had the lowest pass completion rate (57%) of any outfield player.

Kobbie Mainoo 6
The damage had been done by the time Mainoo came on, but his mobility gave United some presence in midfield. Surely has to be brought back in from the cold.
Harry Maguire 5
Brought on to restore some order after a chaotic spell of City pressure, but could do nothing to stop the hosts from adding to their lead.
Joshua Zirkzee 4
Completely anonymous. The Dutchman had four touches in a little over 10 minutes.
Casemiro 5
Amorim’s decision not to play Casemiro proved to be a disastrous one, but I’m not sure there’s much the Brazilian could have done to prevent United from falling to defeat. Inexplicably failed to convert from three yards out as United looked for a consolation goal.
