Manchester United are increasingly confident of winning the race to sign West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes.

After a series of productive discussions, the Red Devils have positioned themselves as front-runners for the coveted 21-year-old.

The ‘ultimate Premier League midfielder‘ has enjoyed an outstanding individual campaign despite West Ham’s relegation battle.

His combative style, press resistance and mature distribution have made him a top summer target for Europe’s elite.

Chelsea and Arsenal have also shown strong interest, but United appear to be in pole position.

A significant factor aiding United’s pursuit is the opportunity for Fernandes to link up with international teammate and United captain Bruno Fernandes, whom he idolises.

Beyond the emotional draw of playing alongside his compatriot, United hold another advantage behind the scenes.

Kyle Macaulay, who briefly served as West Ham’s recruitment chief and played a key role in bringing him to London from Southampton for £40 million last summer, is now part of the structure at Old Trafford.

With United actively searching for a long-term midfield anchor to partner Kobbie Mainoo – especially with Casemiro nearing a free-agent departure – Fernandes fits the profile sought by the club’s hierarchy.

While West Ham are holding out for a significant fee, potentially up to £80m, their precarious league position could weaken their negotiating stance once the transfer window opens.

With the player’s clear desire to make the switch, United will hope to strike early.
