Manchester United have made RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Šeško their top target should they move for another forward this summer, according to The Athletic.
The Premier League side have initiated informal contact with Leipzig, having identified the 22-year-old Slovenian as their preferred option. Newcastle United are also pursuing Šeško, particularly as uncertainty grows around Alexander Isak’s future at St James’ Park.
It was reported earlier this week that United had narrowed their shortlist to Šeško and Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins, and were assessing the financial requirements for both deals. While Watkins remains admired at Old Trafford, Villa have made it clear he is not for sale and United are unwilling to meet the kind of figure that might prompt them to reconsider.
United have already strengthened their attack this summer, signing Matheus Cunha from Wolves and Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford. The club previously explored a move for Šeško in 2019, but felt Salzburg’s €3m asking price at the time was too steep.
Šeško’s current deal with Leipzig runs until 2029, following a contract extension signed last year. That renewal came with a verbal agreement that he would be allowed to leave if a top European club submitted an offer in the €80m–€90m (£69m–£78m) range.
Since joining Leipzig from Red Bull Salzburg in 2023, Šeško has scored 39 goals and registered eight assists in 87 appearances. He debuted for Slovenia’s senior team the day after his 18th birthday and now has 16 goals in 41 caps, having featured at Euro 2024.
