Manchester United retain faith in Ruben Amorim despite mounting pressure

Manchester United’s leadership remains patient with head coach Ruben Amorim despite growing external pressure following another damaging defeat, Sky Sports has reported.

The Portuguese coach, who arrived at Old Trafford last November, has overseen a turbulent 11 months in charge. United’s 3-1 loss to Brentford last weekend underlined their ongoing inconsistency, with the club still yet to record back-to-back victories under Amorim. In total, the Red Devils have amassed just 34 points from their 33 league games.

Despite these results, it is understood that United’s minority shareholder, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, continues to back his first managerial appointment. Ratcliffe, whose INEOS Group assumed control of football operations earlier this year, is determined to allow Amorim a full season to prove himself with his own squad, particularly after more than £200m was invested during the summer transfer window.

Patience, but not without limits

Club sources insist there are no active plans to replace the 40-year-old, nor is there a shortlist of potential successors. Instead, United’s hierarchy is adopting a long-term perspective across all aspects of the club, from recruitment to infrastructure, and is resisting calls for short-term fixes. Yet, as with any elite side, contingency plans inevitably exist should Amorim resign or results deteriorate further.

However, while internal voices remain calm, the external scrutiny has been relentless. Former captain Gary Neville admitted on his podcast that he is worried for Amorim, and pundits have criticised his adherence to a 3-4-2-1 system that has yet to yield consistent success. Amorim himself has maintained he is “not concerned” about his job security, though he acknowledges that results must improve quickly. For now, his future rests largely in the hands of Ratcliffe, whose patience is steady, but not unlimited.
