Manchester United have sacked Ruben Amorim after poor results. Former midfielder Darren Fletcher will take interim charge.

The club said in a statement on Monday that, with the team sixth in the Premier League, it had reluctantly decided it was time to make a change.

Sunday's uninspiring draw at Leeds, who are 16th, was considered the final straw for a hierarchy owned by Ineos and British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe.

Amorim, 40, arrived in November 2024 from Sporting Portugal and was unable to halt the slide. In 14 months he reached the 2025 Europa League final, losing to Tottenham, after a dismal 15th-place league finish.

Fletcher will lead the side against Burnley on Wednesday.

United are 20-time English champions, a record shared with Liverpool, and three-time European champions in 1968, 1999 and 2008. They have struggled to contend since Sir Alex Ferguson left in 2013.
