Manchester United ended their season with clarity, confidence and a 3-0 win at Brighton, as Bruno Fernandes signed off another remarkable campaign with one more record for the collection.
Already crowned Premier League player of the year and football writers’ player of the year, Fernandes added the outright record for assists in a Premier League season. His corner was met powerfully by Patrick Dorgu, giving Manchester United the lead and giving their captain a place of his own in the record books, ahead of marks once shared by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
Fernandes was not finished. Three minutes after half-time, he drilled in United’s third, a captain’s finish from a player who has carried both responsibility and expectation with rare authority.

This was Michael Carrick’s first match since being confirmed as permanent Manchester United manager, and it felt like a fitting summary of why the club have trusted him.
When Carrick took over in January, Champions League qualification looked uncertain. United lacked rhythm, confidence and direction. Seventeen matches later, 12 wins have transformed the mood. Victory at Brighton completed a revival that has been built not on noise, but on calm judgement.
Carrick has changed shape when needed, restored Kobbie Mainoo to the starting XI, attended academy games and offered opportunities to Shea Lacey and Tyler Fletcher. He has also avoided public criticism of his players, preferring quiet authority to theatre.
Most importantly, Manchester United have won football matches, from Manchester City to Brighton, with enough consistency to turn doubt into qualification.
For Brighton, the afternoon carried a strange mood. Fabian Hurzeler’s side began with faint Champions League hopes, yet ended waiting for news from elsewhere to confirm a place in next season’s UEFA Conference League.
Eighth place and a second European campaign in club history should be celebrated. Still, the final whistle brought subdued applause rather than pure joy. Brighton were overtaken by Sunderland, but crucially stayed ahead of Brentford. Only when confirmation arrived from Anfield did the cheers roll around the stadium.
There is progress here, but also frustration. Brighton have standards now. Supporters know when their team has fallen short of its sharpest self.
Manchester United’s 3-0 win at Brighton was impressive, but Carrick will know the next step is harder. A fuller calendar awaits, with Champions League football returning and a squad still short of the depth required to compete properly on four fronts.
Central midfield is the clear priority. Elliot Anderson has been linked strongly, while Atalanta’s Ederson remains of interest. West Ham’s relegation may also make Mateus Fernandes more attainable.
Carrick has done his part. He has steadied Manchester United, lifted them back into Europe’s elite and restored belief. Now the recruitment department must give him the squad to make this revival last.
