Error-strewn 3-0 loss to Manchester City means Red Devils have now made worst start to a season since 1992/93

Ruben Amorim is not in any danger of being sacked by Manchester United despite their dismal derby showing continuing a wretched start to the new season, reports claim.

The Red Devils were easily brushed aside 3-0 by a Manchester City side coming off back-to-back defeats at a rainy Etihad Stadium on Sunday thanks to Erling Haaland’s second-half brace and an early goal from Phil Foden on a poignant day in the city following the death of legendary boxer Ricky Hatton.

United’s latest error-strewn performance led to an all-too-familiar reaction, with former-players-turned-pundits including Roy Keane and Gary Neville once again fiercely critical of their lack of progress, while record goalscorer Wayne Rooney said things had gotten worse under the current coaching regime.

The derby hammering continued a dreadful opening to the season at Old Trafford, with Amorim’s side having won just one and lost three of their first five games across all competitions, their ongoing struggles reaching a nadir as they were dumped out of the Carabao Cup in the second round on penalties by fourth-tier Grimsby last month.

Despite retaining the support of ownership over the summer, it was expected that Amorim would likely need a strong start to the campaign in order to remain in his role long-term, having overseen the majority of their worst-ever Premier League season after initially succeeding Erik ten Hag in November.

Instead the club have now slumped to their worst opening to a season in 33 years despite spending more than £200million on new signings, with more pressure piled on Amorim - who insisted that United will have to sack him before he considers changing his philosophy and system - and further fervent speculation circulating over his future.

However, the Manchester Evening News reported on Monday that the Portuguese coach still had the backing of the United hierarchy despite winning just eight of his first 31 league matches in charge, quoting an unnamed source close to Amorim who apparently admitted it was “incredible” that his position is not yet under threat.

Sky Sports also reported on Monday that there are currently no plans among the United decision-makers to seek another managerial change.

Things do not get much easier for United in the weeks ahead, with Chelsea - who signed Alejandro Garnacho from their next opponents late in the summer transfer window - the visitors to Old Trafford on Saturday, while a trip to face reigning champions Liverpool also beckons next month.

Fans will be desperately hoping that the clear midweeks and extra time on the training pitch provided by a total lack of European football this term owing to last season’s woeful 15th-place finish and Europa League final defeat by Tottenham can help start to solve some of their most glaring issues moving forward.
