Sportitalia suggests Manchester United used the Ederson medical process as an excuse to withdraw from a €45m agreement with Atalanta, and could now turn to Roma’s France international Manu Kone.
The transfer had been agreed on June two, with a €40.5m fixed fee plus €4.5m in performance-related add-ons.
The clubs decided to complete full tests only after Ederson finished the 2026 World Cup with Brazil, following an initial quick check in the United States.
As the weeks passed, United requested more in-depth examinations. After 48 hours of scans, they informed Atalanta that they would not proceed with the move.
Atalanta are said to be confident there are no serious fitness concerns for Ederson, and are thought to view the timing alongside rumours of growing United interest in Kone as no coincidence.
If United do walk away from Ederson, a proposal for Roma’s Kone could follow. His value and profile have risen after his performances for France at the 2026 World Cup, where he pushed Aurelien Tchaouameni out of the starting XI.
