Manchester United have reached an agreement with Cardiff City for the permanent transfer of central defender Will Fish.

The 21-year-old headed into this summer’s pre-season tour with his boyhood club on the back of a very promising loan stint in Scotland with Hibernian.

Fish made 45 appearances in all competitions for Hibernian last term and even made his mark in Europe, featuring five times in UEFA Conference League Qualifiers.

Erik ten Hag showed his faith in the young defender’s talents, handing him minutes in all three pre-season tour fixtures in the USA.

However, his tour ended on a disappointing note, as he suffered an injury against Liverpool. He is fit now, but he no longer finds himself in United’s plans.

The Premier League giants have agreed a £2 million fee to sell him to Cardiff, as per Sky Sports.

In their deal with the Championship outfit, the Red Devils have also included a significant sell-on. Further, a report on OneFootball suggests United are likely to also have a buy-back option in the deal.

The player is reported to be in Cardiff to undergo a medical before finalising his move.

Fish has been a United player since the age of seven and made his debut in 2021 under the tutelage of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The United academy product is joining a side in desperate need of defensive reinforcements. Erol Bulut’s Cardiff conceded five goals to Burnley in the Championship last weekend.

As such, Cardiff could certainly do with Fish’s services. Meanwhile, considering the competition at the Welsh club, the Englishman should also get plenty of minutes to continue his development.

Fish is set to join a long list of highly-rated youngsters who United have decided to offload permanently this summer.

This week alone, United have agreed deals to cut ties with the likes of Facundo Pellistri (Panathinaikos) and Maxi Oyedele (Legia Warsaw).
