Manchester United are priming a summer midfield revamp, with at least two signings discussed and Casemiro set to depart.

The Athletic reports that plans centre on a No 6 and a No 8, possibly three additions if exits mount. Casemiro’s situation appears clearer, Manuel Ugarte has underwhelmed, and expected European qualification underlines the need for depth.

Replacing Casemiro’s mix of ball-winning, passing and aerial strength is difficult, especially with an emphasis on under-25s. A 6 or 6/8 hybrid could share duties with Kobbie Mainoo over a heavier schedule.

On Bruno Fernandes, Champions League football could help keep him. Al Hilal were willing to pay about £80 million, possibly £100 million, last summer, and United weighed their options. He felt the club were open to a sale, then was told he is wanted, and his deal runs to 2027 with a one-year option.

Elliot Anderson is seen as a leading target, but competition from Manchester City and others is strong. United cannot pin hopes on one player. Carlos Baleba remains monitored after Brighton’s valuation, and Adam Wharton is viewed as a different profile who might need a sturdier partner, with Mateus Fernandes at West Ham cited.

Newcastle do not want to sell Sandro Tonali, and talk around Bruno Guimaraes is suspected contract positioning. The priority is a No 6, with most of the budget likely directed there for a ball-winner. Agents are understood to know that need, and landing a No 6 and a No 8 could bring improvement.
