Both sides seeking a return to winning ways at Old Trafford in sole Premier League clash on Boxing Day

Manchester United host Newcastle in the Premier League on Boxing Day, and Ruben Amorim will be hoping his side can bounce back from two disappointing results.

United lost 2-1 away at in-form Aston Villa last weekend after a stunning double from Morgan Rogers after previously being held to a wild 4-4 home draw by Bournemouth, significantly dampening the run-up to Christmas for Red Devils fans after a mini-resurgence.

Newcastle are not exactly in great form themselves at the moment, blowing an early two-goal lead to draw with Chelsea last time out having also lost the Tyne-Wear derby to fierce rivals Sunderland as a result of Nick Woltemade’s own goal, with a last-gasp Carabao Cup quarter-final win over Fulham sandwiched in between.

The hosts go into this game sitting four places and three points above Eddie Howe’s side in seventh and would go level with Liverpool in fifth and fourth-placed Chelsea with a win here.

Date, kick-off time and venue

Manchester United vs Newcastle is scheduled for an 8pm GMT kick-off on Boxing Day - Friday December 26, 2025.

The match will take place at Old Trafford in Manchester.

Manchester United vs Newcastle team news

Manchester United will be without their captain Bruno Fernandes after he picked up a rare injury against Aston Villa. It is thought to be a hamstring issue and could rule him out for up to a month.

Harry Maguire has a thigh injury and is not expected back until early January, whilst Matthijs de Ligt has a back issue and is not expected to return for this one.

Kobbie Mainoo is in contention to get more game time now that Fernandes is injured, but he has unfortunately picked up a small calf injury and will likely not feature again in 2025.

Casemiro is back from suspension, but Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui are all away at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Newcastle are in the middle of an injury crisis, with their defence being hit especially badly. Nick Pope could be back and Sven Botman is getting better, but Dan Burn, Tino Livramento and Kieran Trippier are all definitely ruled out.

Emil Krafth, Jamaal Lascelles and William Osula are all also out.

Manchester United vs Newcastle prediction

Both sides are struggling coming into this fixture, but Newcastle have won five of their last six games against Manchester United and no Fernandes massively weakens Amorim's team.

But with Newcastle depleted so much in defence because of injuries, it seems very unlikely that the Red Devils will not at least score once at Old Trafford.

With a metaphorical hangover for both sides after Christmas, it would be no surprise to see a draw between them.

Draw, 1-1.

Head to head (h2h) history and results
