Red Devils looking for redemption after midweek cup embarrassment
Ruben Amorim has plenty to ponder as his Manchester United side return to Premier League action following their Carabao Cup humiliation against Grimsby Town.
United were defeated on penalties by the fourth-tier Mariners at Blundell Park on Wednesday, and were 2-0 down at half time.
That saw Amorim turn to his superstars on the bench, as he threw on captain Bruno Fernandes, first-choice centre-back Matthijs de Ligt, and new summer signing Bryan Mbeumo.
Fellow fresh face Matheus Cunha played the full game but missed a crucial penalty in the shootout, and it was Mbeumo who hit the crossbar with his second spot-kick to send the Red Devils crashing out.
In his pre-match press conference ahead of this fixture against Burnley, the Portuguese head coach admitted that he had considered quitting his post several times since taking over the reins from Erik ten Hag in November last year.
He also remarked that he sometimes loves his players, and sometimes hates them.
Now, Amorim has a conundrum facing him about who starts this game at Old Trafford.
He played Andre Onana for the first time this season against Grimsby, but the Cameroonian put in an error-laden display. Hence, Altay Bayindir should get the nod once more in net.
At wing-back, Patrick Dorgu was sacrificed in the second half, and so was Manuel Ugarte in the engine room, so it remains to be seen whether either will have harmed their chances of a start against Scott Parker’s Clarets.
One player who definitely won’t be involved is Alejandro Garnacho, who is undergoing a medical at Chelsea ahead of a £40million move.
Rasmus Hojlund is also unlikely to feature as he nears a switch to Napoli.
Predicted Man Utd XI (3-4-2-1): Bayindir; Yoro, de Ligt, Shaw; Diallo, Casemiro, Fernandes, Dorgu; Mbeumo, Cunha; Sesko.
Injured: Mazraoui, Martinez
