Manuel Ugarte (23) failed to live up to expectations at Paris Saint-Germain. Having arrived from Sporting for a €60m fee, in a move reportedly not sanctioned by Luis Enrique, who arrived in the same summer, he played a central role in the opening games of the season.

The Uruguay international, a proficient ball-winner, saw his game time slowly decrease as the season progressed, with Luis Enrique noting his deficiencies in possession. Ultimately, it was these deficiencies that saw him relegated to a peripheral role. When the summer arrived, PSG entered the market for a replacement, signing João Neves and leaving Ugarte in search of a new club.

Ugarte evokes ‘difficult’ and ‘strange’ pre-season

After a whole summer of courtship, the Uruguayan midfielder completed a move to Manchester United, with PSG reportedly not making a loss on the player signed one year earlier. In an interview transcribed by L’Équipe, Ugarte admitted feeling “very anxious” about the expectations following his arrival at the Parc des Princes, before evoking what he described as a “difficult summer”.

“The pre-season was very strange for me because I wasn’t used to being in that situation, playing so little,” said Ugarte, who following his move late in the transfer window, is yet to make his debut for Manchester United.
