This year’s Africa Cup of Nations is down to the final four teams after a tournament of drama, controversy and plenty of goals.
Four of the biggest teams in Africa; Egypt, Senegal, Nigeria and Morocco, face off this week after overcoming their quarter-final clashes.
Sadio Mane will come up against former Liverpool team-mate Mo Salah as Senegal meet Egypt, while Nigeria will have to overcome hosts Morocco if they want to reach the final.
Mane’s Senegal progressed to the last four for the seventh time after Iliman Ndiaye scored the only goal in a tight 1-0 victory over ten-men Mali, who had Tottenham’s Yves Bissouma sent off in first-half injury time. From there it was smooth going for the west Africans, who made their man advantage count in sealing their semi-final spot.
The Lions of Teranga will take on Egypt on Wednesday, with Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah scoring the winning goal in a frenetic 3-2 victory over the Ivory Coast. Omar Marmoush’s fourth-minute goal set the Pharaohs on their way with Ramy Rabia doubling Egypt’s lead in the 32nd minute and putting them fully in control.
Ahmed Abou El Fotouh’s own goal brought Ivory Coast back into the game five minutes before half-time, but Salah’s 52nd minute goal confirmed Egypt’s passage into the final four. Guela Doue’s goal 17 minutes from time for the Atlas Lions set up a tense final quarter of the match, but the record Champions held on to progress to their 14th semi-final.
Nigeria comfortably confirmed their place in their 16th AFCON semi-final with a dominant 2-0 win over Algeria. Two second-half goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams sent the Super Eagles on their way to the final four, where they will face hosts Morocco, also to play on Wednesday.
The Arab Cup Champions defeated Cameroon 2-0 to reach their first semi-final since 2004, after goals in both halves from Brahim Diaz and Ismael Saibari continued their path towards tournament glory on home soil.
