Marc-Andre ter Stegen issue resolved as Barcelona exit now all-but done | OneFootball

Barcelona have done well moving unwanted players off the books this summer, and they are about to close another of these operations. Earlier this month, an agreement was reached for Marc-Andre ter Stegen to join Ajax on loan for the 2026-27 season, but an official announcement has yet to come – but it soon will.

Ajax’s decision to sign ter Stegen, which has been criticised, is being led by new head coach Michel Sanchez, who worked with the Germany international at Girona during the second half of last season. Barcelona will greatly appreciate being able to get some of his wages off the books, although they have once again been left without a permanent exit for a player that is not counted on by Hansi Flick.

Nevertheless, ter Stegen is about to leave Barcelona, with Sport reporting that the tax problems that had held up the deal have now been resolved, thus opening the door for Ajax to get their man.

Deal should be finalised in the next 24 hours

The tax issue being resolved means ter Stegen can now leave Barcelona and travel to Amsterdam, where he will undergo medical tests later on Wednesday. All being well, Ajax should be able to announce his signing in the next 24 hours, meaning that the Catalans can officially look forward to paying a reduced portion of his salary – although it won’t be by much, as they have assumed the vast majority of his wages as part of the agreement.

It will be interesting to see how ter Stegen gets on at Ajax. It will be the first time in two years that he will have the opportunity to be a regular starter again, and there is no doubt that Barcelona officials will keep an eye on his progress over the course of the 2026-27 season.
