Marc-Andre Ter Stegen has turned down a January loan to West Ham United, MD reports, with Girona now the likeliest destination for the rest of the season.

The 33-year-old reappeared in December after summer back surgery. On his return he was told there is no place for him in Hansi Flick’s squad, with Joan Garcia and Wojciech Szczesny considered first and second choice for 2025-26.

With Joao Cancelo already signed, Barcelona’s focus this month is on departures. A winter exit is expected, given he needs minutes to guarantee a starting spot for Germany at this summer’s World Cup.

He does not intend to move to England in January, preferring to remain close to his family in Catalonia.

That stance makes Girona look almost certain to secure him for the second half of the season. A deal is close to being agreed, and he would start ahead of Paulo Gazzaniga, who has been below-par.
