Eagles strolled to victory on major European debut
Marc Guehi has been told that he could play “anywhere” after the Crystal Palace captain saw a Deadline Day move to Liverpool fall through at the last minute.
The England international had been set to sign for the Premier League champions, but found himself staying put at Palace, where he has excelled in the early stages of the campaign.
The Eagles are on a 19-game unbeaten streak under Oliver Glasner in all competitions, the longest in the club’s history.
That run has seen them lift the FA Cup and the Community Shield in that time, and they made their major European debut on Thursday with a comfortable 2-0 win at Dynamo Kyiv to underline their favourites’ tag.
On TNT Sports, pundit Owen Hargreaves, formerly of Manchester United and England, said that the defender was “a dream”, and that he could see the centre-back playing “anywhere”.
"He’s a fabulous player but he’s probably even as nice a lad as he is a player,” Hargreaves said.
"The way he handled that situation, he could’ve thrown his toys out of the pram like some others players did, and got their move but he has been the ultimate professional.
"He knows he is the captain of the football club, they’ve helped him, and he will get his move probably at the end of the season and he could probably go anywhere…Real Madrid.
"He’s a dream. On the ball he’s really good, he can defend really well. He’s only 25. He’s the oldest 25-year-old I’ve ever seen because he’s so level-headed. He’s so composed and so reliable."
Guehi’s former Palace team-mate, Joel Ward, said that the 25-year-old had an opportunity to “kick on” after his summer disappointment.
"What happened in the summer is in the past,” Ward said.
“I think, for me, one of Marc's biggest strengths is the way in which he handles situations.
"He’s got such a great support network around him in his family."
Palace sit second in the Premier League table, and are the only unbeaten team left in the English top flight.
Last weekend, they beat champions Liverpool 2-1 in injury time at Selhurst Park, and they travel to Everton on Sunday looking to keep that flawless record going.
