Manchester City’s John Stones has issued a glowing report for his international and now Etihad Stadium teammate Marc Guehi.
The defender became teammates with Stones this year at City following Guehi’s move during the January transfer window, and early signs suggest the latter of the two England internationals has settled quickly into his new surroundings.
Marc Guehi’s arrival came at a key moment in the season, with Manchester City navigating a congested fixture list and a number of defensive absences, all whilst targeting Arsenal at the summit of the Premier League table among other aims for silverware success.
Guehi’s transition into life under Pep Guardiola has drawn praise both internally and externally, with the centre-back quickly trusted in high-profile matches. His calmness in possession and positional awareness have already seen him feature regularly across competitions, underlining the confidence the coaching staff have in his ability.
Having previously captained Crystal Palace and built a reputation as one of the league’s most consistent defenders combined with an FA Cup success, Guehi arrived with leadership credentials that appear to have translated seamlessly into City’s dressing room.
Speaking during a new episode of Manchester City’s official club podcast, John Stones was asked for his initial thoughts on Marc Guehi, following his fellow England international’s switch to the Etihad Stadium during the recent January transfer window.
“[Marc is] great, he’s such a good guy to be around. Very mature head on his shoulders. I’m a big fan of Marc’s, personally, for how he goes about the game. How he goes about his business, the qualities he has,” said Stones.
Reflecting on their previous experiences of playing alongside one another, Stones said, “We got to a final together [with England] which was another incredible moment for us.
“For him, how he played throughout that tournament with new feelings and experience for him to be going through games which are cut-throat.
“And to be successful, I’m so proud of how he played and the partnership we had together during those weeks away [at the 2024 Euros] – it was a pleasure.
“He will be an incredible signing for us for however long he’s here.”
Marc Guehi’s performances since joining Manchester City have only reinforced John Stones’ comments, with the defender making an immediate impact at club level.
Comfortable playing out from the back and aggressive when stepping into midfield areas to find passes into attacking spaces, he has shown an understanding of Manchester City’s tactical demands despite limited time at the club.
His first goal in sky blue, coming from the bench in an FA Cup fourth round victory over Salford City, further underlined his composure in decisive moments, while his growing presence has strengthened Manchester City’s push on multiple fronts.
With domestic silverware still firmly in sight and a Carabao Cup Final against Arsenal looming, Marc Guehi could yet play a central role in City’s season, despite his ineligibility to feature in the aforementioned final.
