Manchester City’s Marc Guehi has responded to Liverpool fans who heavily booed his every touch in Sunday afternoon’s 1-2 victory at Anfield.
City’s late turnaround on Merseyside kept Pep Guardiola’s side firmly in the Premier League title picture, with Erling Haaland converting a stoppage-time penalty after Bernardo Silva had drawn the visitors level in the closing stages.
The result marked a rare away success against the reigning champions of England at Anfield and underlined the resilience within a squad that has undergone significant transition over the last 12 months.
The match also came amid heightened attention around Manchester City’s defensive options, particularly following the summer arrival of Marc Guehi in January and previous links to the England international during the club’s recruitment drives.
Guehi’s presence at the heart of the defence proved important on the day, producing key interventions as Liverpool pushed for a decisive second goal, and the centre-back’s composure and authority made him a focal point in Guardiola’s backline.
Speaking to the club’s official website after Manchester City’s vital victory on Merseyside, Marc Guehi said of the team’s personality to come from behind, “When you’re trying to win games, especially against tough opposition like Liverpool, that’s the standard.
“It has to be every single person giving every single bit of energy and effort for their brother next to them, and everyone did that today.”
And on the subject of being strangely booed by the home crowd, presumably as a result of the former Crystal Palace captain opting not to hold out for a free transfer to Arne Slot’s side in the summer, Guehi responded with a smile on his face, “I’m not sure why, to be honest!
“But I can’t control what their fans think of me. I’m just grateful for OUR fans for sticking by me, supporting me the whole game!”
Manchester City will now hope the dramatic victory can act as a springboard during the run-in this campaign, particularly as attention continues to swirl around Pep Guardiola’s long-term future and the club’s ongoing squad refresh.
With several players facing uncertain roles and others only recently integrated into the side, performances such as the one at Anfield could prove pivotal in shaping the season’s outcome as City remain in the hunt for all four honours.
For Marc Guehi, the focus will be on maintaining his strong early impression in sky blue, as Manchester City look to build stability at the back. If the England defender continues to deliver, he could quickly become one of the central figures in the club’s next era.
