Marcelino joins Primera and Segunda coaches at refereeing reform summit | OneFootball

Marcelino García Toral spoke on behalf of coaches at a new meeting of the Refereeing System Reform Committee on Tuesday at the Ciudad del Fútbol in Las Rozas, focused on dialogue and improving Spanish officiating.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the session gathered coaches from the top two tiers to share feedback aimed at raising refereeing standards. Marcelino was joined by Miguel Ángel Sánchez ‘Míchel’, Joan Francesc Ferrer ‘Rubi’, José Ángel ‘Cuco’ Ziganda, José Rojo ‘Pacheta’, Juan Francisco Funes, Alberto González and Borja Jiménez.

The forum was chaired by Rafael Louzán and included Javier Tebas, LaLiga president, Fran Soto for the CTA, AFE members, referees Carlos del Cerro, Valentín Pizarro, Miguel Ángel Ortiz, Gonzalo García and Ylenia Sánchez, plus club delegates. The RFEF president thanked all parties and highlighted the first refereeing collective agreement in Spain, which strengthens the sector’s labour, legal and organisational framework.

Soto outlined measures introduced this season and a slate of proposals, including applying artificial intelligence to match appointments. He underlined meritocracy over age or territoriality, the latter removed from assignments this season, and invited clubs, players and coaches to regular commission meetings.

Technical lead David Fernández Borbalán, alongside VAR leads Eduardo Prieto Iglesias and Aitor Gorostegui, assessed the current state of video review. They reminded attendees that the CTA maintains an open stance and that VAR should intervene only when the incident demands it. Discussion also covered unified criteria and review timings, acknowledging margins of error and a continued drive to bolster credibility.
