According to Leeds Live, local reports suggest the Argentine is set to step down after his second major tournament in charge, having finished third at the 2024 Copa America.
Speaking at an event hosted by the Uruguayan Football Association, he said: "Our job ends with the World Cup." He added: "It is a miracle in any professional’s sporting career to take part in the World Cup. I will be forever grateful to Uruguay for allowing me to enjoy a competition like the World Cup."
The former Leeds United boss has taken charge of 36 matches since May 2023, winning almost 42% of them. His tenure has featured friction with some players, most notably Luis Suarez, yet a remodelled approach and stability have won over supporters. Uruguay will face Spain, Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia in Group H at the 2026 finals.
Bielsa, 70, returned to England for the first time since leaving Leeds when Uruguay drew 1-1 with England at Wembley in March, a match in which Dominic Calvert-Lewin collected his first Three Lions cap in nearly five years. The striker has not been named in Thomas Tuchel's final 26-man World Cup squad, confirmed this morning.
