Marcelo Bielsa is set to return to England in March 2026, with Uruguay due at Wembley as England also host Ao Tanaka’s Japan in friendlies.
His visit would set a Wembley first, the longest gap between an opposition manager’s games there against England at 26 years and 32 days, surpassing Bernd Stange’s 25-year mark. According to Sport 890, senior Uruguay players want Bielsa to leave and have warned internally they will refuse to play if he stays.
Bielsa’s last Wembley outing came with Argentina in February 2000, a 0-0 draw at the old stadium.
It is a turbulent spell for the 70-year-old and there is a chance he is replaced before March.
The tension follows his decision to exclude Luis Suarez after the Inter Miami striker criticised his management style. Bielsa said he remembers Suarez for his Copa America contribution and argued grievances can be made publicly, yet should be kept in-house, whether at home or within the national team.
Leeds supporters heading to England versus Uruguay may yet get a rare glimpse of their former manager, though the uncertainty surrounding his position remains.
