Corinthians football executive Marcelo Paz announced that José Martínez is leaving the club after a prolonged absence and a left knee anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained while on holiday. He said an amicable settlement is nearing completion.
According to Globo.com, the Venezuelan reported back to Parque São Jorge more than a month late, and during his time in Venezuela he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
Paz said the board, legal and medical departments discussed the situation and chose an amicable exit, even though a unilateral termination was available to the club. He described negotiations as being in their final stages.
He added that Martínez had honoured the shirt when available, but disciplinary standards outweigh everything. The club, he said, could not let the matter pass and the player is ending his spell at Corinthians.
Under the settlement being finalised, Corinthians will cover the surgery and pay 30% of Martínez’s wages from February to December 2026, excluding January. In return, Martínez will forgo his 2027 salaries, and his contract ends on 31 December 2027.
