Marco Silva is holding off any decision on his future, with the 48-year-old waiting for Rui Costa to clarify Benfica plans at the Luz and, crucially, whether José Mourinho stays.
Record writes that Silva is Benfica’s preferred option and the club will only move for the Fulham manager, whose contract is nearing its end, once there is confirmation Mourinho will not continue. That scenario includes Mourinho accepting a return to Real Madrid.
Reports in Spain had even suggested an agreement was in place, although there has been no confirmation of talks between Benfica and Silva.
Silva is thought to view a switch to the Luz positively, yet he intends to wait until Benfica settle matters internally.
A pivotal week now looms for the hierarchy led by Rui Costa. With Mourinho’s departure seen as almost certain, the search for a new coach could delay plans already being mapped out for next season.
After Fulham’s match against Wolves, Silva said he had not decided and that neither he nor the club would communicate anything until a decision is taken.
