FC Barcelona lost their winning run in El Clasicos as they were defeated 2-1 by Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu last night. After a poor first half, the Catalans were able to gain more control of the game in the second half, but were still unable to get the required goals and turn the score around.

Hansi Flick was not present on the sidelines for this game, as he had been suspended in the last league game against Sevilla. His assistant, Marcus Sorg, replaced him on the bench for this game, while the German head-coach himself watched the game from a box.

Furthermore, it was also Sorg who addressed the press conference after the game, and as Mundo Deportivo has reported, he admitted that his Barcelona team was unable to create a lot of danger:

“In the final third of the pitch, we lacked the ability to break through and create danger.”

The German assistant also highlighted why Lamine Yamal was unable to play his characteristic game:

“It wasn’t easy for him. We talked at halftime about needing to get him into one-on-one situations — we didn’t manage it in the first half, and not in the second either. He tried everything, but they defended him well and he couldn’t pull it off.”

“I think the issue of injury is very important — he needs more matches at the highest level. He’s only 18 years old; we have to give him more time to reach his best form… the defenders give their all to stop him, and this year they’ve worked harder.”

Sorg once again highlighted that his team did everything, but was still unable to create the required chances for the forwards:

“We tried everything; we finished with only two defenders to create more chances, even though we know Madrid are very good on the counterattack, but we didn’t create enough opportunities.”

The German assistant did not want to talk a lot about the brawl that erupted at the end of the game:

“There were a lot of people around the benches shouting; we have to accept it and stay focused on the match.”

There is no doubt that this defeat would have stinged the Blaugrana team, that was missing several important players because of injuries. However, it is still early in the season, and if Hansi Flick is able to iron out some weaknesses, Barcelona would still be able to compete for the big titles.
