Le Progres reports that former Spanish prime minister Mariano Rajoy made racist remarks about France’s national team ahead of Tuesday’s semi-final against Spain, scheduled for 21:00.
He made the comments while reacting to Spain’s win over Belgium on Saturday. He praised La Roja’s football, then turned to their next opponents, France.
In a written message, Rajoy said it was hard to predict what would happen, then highlighted France’s pedigree, noting they are double world champions, finalists of the last edition, unbeaten in this World Cup and currently top of the FIFA rankings.
He also referred to the origins of Kylian Mbappé’s team-mates and wrote that France’s squad was of a very high level without French players. He added that they play very well and would be a formidable opponent.
This is not the first such incident involving the French team. The France captain was targeted by a Paraguayan senator the day after Les Bleus beat Paraguay 1-0.
