Martin O'Neill is poised to remain as Celtic's permanent manager after steering the club to the Premiership title and Scottish Cup last season.

According to LeicesterMercury.co.uk, the 74-year-old is expected to sign a one-year contract, with an option for a further year.

He twice took interim charge either side of Wilfried Nancy's ill-fated spell, steadying a crisis. Talks then followed about staying on, with former Celtic striker Robbie Keane also interviewed by majority owner Dermot Desmond.

"But with his management skills and record for major honours, he has justified his appointment. I hope and wish him all the best for the next season. Martin O'Neill is Martin O'Neill," Stiliyan Petrov told Sky Sports.

"He'll feel about 102 by the time that year flies past! But with a one-year deal, they just want to stabilise the club. The last couple of months, he has shown why he's been such a great character. But here's a question: if they win again next year, what's going to happen?"

Chris Sutton, who played under O'Neill 20 years ago, wrote in the Daily Record that while the turnaround in recent months stunned him, the board should not assume repeat miracles and must back their manager. He suggested a major squad shake-up could come and questioned how the club ended up here after months spent discussing a new appointment.
