The Premier League have appointed Jarred Gillett into the role of on-field match referee for Sunderland against Manchester City on New Year’s Day.

Three points on the road meant City remained within touching distance of the current league leaders Arsenal, sitting just two points behind Mikel Arteta’s men and a singular point ahead of Aston Villa in third.

However, the tasks on the horizon certainly do not get any easier, and Manchester City know they will have to be at their focussed and imperious best if they are to emerge victorious at the Stadium of Light.

The clash with Regis Le Bris’ Sunderland marks the start of a hectic run of games that includes ties in the Premier League as well as the UEFA Champions League, Carabao Cup semi-final, and the start of their latest FA Cup pursuit from the third round.

Ahead of the meeting between Sunderland and Manchester City, the Premier League have now announced the list of match officials to oversee proceedings at the Stadium of Light!

Match Referee

As Sunderland welcome Manchester City to the Stadium of Light for the first time since their promotion back into the Premier League, Jarred Gillett has been appointed as the on-field match referee for the meeting.

The Australian official will be overseeing his 11th contest of the ongoing season, having officiated matches in the Premier League and Carabao Cup, as well as an international friendly at one stage.

In his 10 outings to date, the 39-year-old has brandished 36 yellow cards, one straight red card, and awarded three penalty kicks in the process.

As for Manchester City’s record in matches overseen by Jarred Gillett, Pep Guardiola’s side remain unbeaten, winning 10 of the 12 such matches and emerging with a draw in the outstanding two contests.

Gillett has met with City on two occassions already this season, overseeing their Premier League opening weekend win over Wolves at Molineux, before taking charge of the 1-3 win in South Wales in the Carabao Cup fourth round tie at Swansea City.

Assistant Referees

Accompanying Jarred Gillet in the North-East of England this Thursday evening will be an assistant referee pairing of Gary Beswick and Adrian Holmes, the Premier League have confirmed.

Video Assistant Referees

Over at Stockley Park and operating from within the VAR Hub for this one, the Premier League have appointed referee Peter Bankes in the role of Video Assistant Referee, alongside Assistant Video Assistant Referee Natalie Aspinall.

Fourth Official

Ensuring everything remains in check between Sunderland’s Regis Le Bris and Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola will be the contest’s appointed fourth official Anthony Backhouse, it has been confirmed.
