Who Are Ya? - DC United

It has been a slow climb back to respectability for D.C. United after last year's dismal campaign ended with the dubious honour of taking home the Wooden Spoon—a trophy nobody wants in their cabinet. However, things are looking up at Audi Field. Following a painful stretch under Troy Lesesne the club appointed well-travelled Swiss tactician René Weiler last season. Weiler has brought stability, discipline, and incremental improvements to the side. Sitting in 9th place in the Eastern Conference with 19 points, DCU has become stubborn to defeat, picking up 4 draws out of their last 5 matches.

The roster has undergone a major facelift to fuel this push. The marquee addition was Designated Player Tai Baribo from Philadelphia Union, coming off an impressive 18-goal campaign. Joining him upfront is Romanian International Louis Munteanu, who arrived on a DP contract from CFR Cluj for a club-record fee. To add depth and youth, DCU secured forward Nathan Ordaz from LAFC under the U22 Initiative for a $2.1 million transfer fee. Defense and goalkeeping got veteran upgrades as well, landing former Toronto FC captain Sean Johnson as a free agent and picking up defender Dylan Nealis from NYRB. Adding a bit of extra narrative depth to the goalkeeper union, former TFC netminder Alex Bono was also brought in from New England during the offseason.

Players to watch

Tai Baribo - The Israeli striker has carried over his lethal form to D.C. United, serving as a focal point for the attack. With 9 goals on the season already, Baribo's movement in the box and instincts on set pieces make him a constant threat. His ability to hold up play and bring wingers into the attack will test a shaky Toronto backline that struggles with physical, aerial centre-forwards.

Louis Munteanu - The Romanian international DP has been a spark plug when given space in the final third, boasting 5 goals across his initial appearances. Combining sharp technical ability with crisp link-up play, Munteanu excels at dropping into pockets of space and driving at central defenders. If TFC allows him room to turn, his clinical finishing ability could make for a long night at Audi Field.

Peglow - Operating as the creative spark in midfield and on the flanks, Peglow’s directness and dribbling ability give DCU an extra dimension in transitions. While his goal and assist output continues to build, his true impact lies in shifting defensive lines and drawing fouls in dangerous areas. TFC's fullbacks will need to stay disciplined to keep him from unlocking the defense.

Let's TF-See - Toronto's Current Form

Two uninspiring goalless draws following the World Cup break have extended Toronto FC's winless streak to a staggering 10 matches. You have to trace all the way back to April 4th to find TFC's last victory—a chaotic 3–2 win at home against the Colorado Rapids that relied on a Zac Steffen goalkeeping gaffe when he mishandled a backpass from the half line. That is hardly a blueprint for success, and confidence remains near zero.

Expecting offense from TFC right now is a fool's errand. Once again, supporters are left waiting anxiously—and not in a good way—for the starting XI release to see what hare-brained scheme Robin Fraser is cooking up. Whatever is happening in the lab, he's certainly not cooking up something special for us. In their recent mid-week outing, Sargeant played just 45 minutes behind Emilio and Vilsaint, with neither striker offering anything inspiring up front. To quote TFC Legend Jozy Altidore, "Are you crazy, Are you dumb, brother?" On top of the attack, major squad rotation questions remain: what exactly has happened to Raheem Edwards and Kobe Franklin?

Don't hold your breath for a miraculous result in D.C. this Saturday. TFC needs to start collecting three points urgently, or the "TFC 'til I Die" faithful will be putting Robin Fraser 'on a wave' right out of town.
