Who Are Ya? - Vancouver Whitecaps

The Whitecaps enter the 2026 MLS Season riding high after making the finals in MLS Cup and the CONCACAF Champions Cup (nee CONCACAF Champions League). With the addition of German superstar Thomas Muller last season, the club is only looking to improve on their second-place finish in the Western Conference.

Vancouver defeated Real Salt Lake 1-0 in their opening match of the 2026 MLS season thanks to a goal from newcomer AZ Jackson.  Despite the scoreline, Vancouver dominated RSL at home. Additionally, the Whitecaps dispatched of Costa Rican side C.S. Cartaginés in round 1 of the CONCACAF Champions Cup on Wednesday night with a 2-0 victory at home. Kenji Cabrera and Sebastian Berhalter scored to help the Caps advance to the Second Round.

The Insider’s Perspective

This week’s edition of The Insider’s Perspective is brought to us by AFTN Canada. AFTN and AFTN went global in 2009, launching a blog in Canada in March of that year dedicated to covering Vancouver Whitecaps Football Club at all levels from their Residency teams to the MLS first team. Add in features on the local soccer scene in British Columbia, including the CanPL, League 1 BC, and the Canadian national teams. Thanks to Michale McColl from AFTN for giving us an insider's perspective on the ‘Caps. Listen to their podcast The AFTN Soccer Show for a comprehensive roundup of the week’s footballing news from the West Coast. 1. Jesper Sørensen just signed an extension to the end of the 2028 season. Many of us were surprised to see Vanni Sartini dismissed after the 2025 season. What does Sorensen bring to the team that saw a marked improvement in all competitions last season?

He brings a far different and more astute tactical approach. Defensively, the side moved away from zonal marking, to great effect. The midfield and the attack want the ball more than a Sartini side did, who were more happy to hit on the counter. Sorensen wants his teams to move the ball forward quickly, press high, and put real pressure on winning the ball back in the opposition half. He's also not been afraid to use his full squad, albeit that was partly dictated by the mass of injuries last year. Sartini made it clear he did not like wingers, but Sorensen embraces them. But the team has a real identity under Sorensen and there feels that there's more tactical awareness.

2. The ownership and stadium question has come to the forefront once again thanks to Commissioner Don Garber's statement, " I’m not quite sure we’ve been seeing the same level of public support for the club that exists for other teams in the market and other MLS clubs." How are Whitecaps supporters feeling about the uncertainty surrounding the team and Garber's comments?

There's definitely a lot of uncertainty, not helped by so many public and seemingly opposing comments from all the parties on this to start the year. Now that the season has started, more focus is on the pitch, but it's always there in the background. Axel Schuster has said that there isn't a deadline to get things sorted, but Garber's recent comments seemed to contradict that. There's always a worry that the team will move for many after the Grizzlies situation in the NBA. I'm more of a glass half full kind of person and don't think we're anywhere near close to that point right now. But the club has to attract corporate money to make things more viable. So far we're seeing some signs of that and the locking up of some key players to long term deals has eased some fans' worries a little last week.

3. The Caps lost two Canadian Internationals in the offseason - Ali Ahmed and Jayden Nelson. Has the front office done a good job bringing in some reinforcements to the squad that will continue to keep the team at an elite level (apart from Az Jackson's hair replacing Nelson's 'do)?

Both are big losses, but certainly not irreplaceable ones. They had 20 assists and 8 goals between them across all competitions, so others definitely need to step up to fill that void. The offseason signings probably aren't seen as sexy or, on paper, big difference makes, but you could have said the same thing about the likes of Jayden Nelson and Emmanuel Sabbi last year. Cheikh Sabaly will be the key one. If he can find some of his Ligue2 form in MLS, he'll be a great back up to Brian White. Bruno Caicedo is going to be an exciting talent but it'll be a good few weeks before we really see his impact. AZ Jackson will be the one to watch in the next few weeks. He already has a goal on his MLS debut and has a lot to prove since he's only on loan till June. I think these will be enough to have the Whitecaps in a strong position till after the World Cup, but would fully expect to see a bigger addition or two for the second half of the season.

4. What is your go-to pre-match spot around BC Place? Where would you recommend for travelling fans to check out while in Vancouver?

There are so many pubs around the stadium, I can't really recommend any. Granville Street, with a walk to the stadium, will be the fans’ best bet for variety. I would say all are good and safe for travelling fans, but probably better to avoid the Southsiders' home pub Dublin Calling and Rain City Brigade's Fable Diner.

Opposing Players to Watch

Brian White - Coming off a career-high 24 goals across all competitions in 2025, he is the first player in the club's MLS era to record 15+ goals in three consecutive seasons. White’s physical presence in the box will require constant attention from the Toronto defense.

Thomas Müller - The German legend and Bayern Munich icon has officially transitioned to a Designated Player role for the 2026 season after a stellar debut stint last year. Müller wasted no time adjusting to MLS, tallying 9 goals and 4 assists in just 15 appearances last season, and he remains the most dangerous creative force on the pitch for Vancouver. His ability to find and exploit pockets of space will be a massive test for the TFC midfield and backline.

Sebastian Berhalter -  one of the premier midfielders in the league, earning 2025 MLS Best XI honors and a spot in the USMNT conversation ahead of the World Cup. He is the engine of the Vancouver midfield, providing elite ball recovery and exceptional distribution that links the defense to the attack. Berhalter’s ability to disrupt play and launch quick transitions will be a deciding factor in who wins the battle for the center of the park.

The TFC Connection

Currently, Vancouver midfielder/defender Ralph Priso and TFC fullback Richie Laryea are the only players on each roster who have played for both teams. Priso left Toronto FC in 2022 after being traded to the Colorado Rapids for Mark-Anthony Kaye. In March 2024, Priso was traded to the Vancouver Whitecaps FC in exchange for MLS SuperDraft picks and up to $150,000 in GAM. He made his debut for the club on April 6 against his former club, Toronto FC.

Laryea, after his transfer to Nottingham Forest, was loaned to the Vancouver Whitecaps in August 2023 as his loan deal with Toronto expired in July. Laryea played 12 matches and scored one goal in his time in Vancouver In January 2024, his time with the club had ended as his loan expired. He was re-signed by Toronto in February 2024.

Honourable mention to Toronto FC assistant coach Steven Beitashour, who played for both teams. Beita played 54 matches for Vancouver in the 2014 and 2015 seasons before being traded to Toronto for a draft pick. In the 2016 and 2017 seasons, Beitashour played 51 games for TFC and was an instrumental part of the MLS Cup runs in these seasons.

Some other notable names that have played for both clubs are Terry Dunfield, Robert Earnshaw, Deybi Flores, Doneil Henry, Tossaint Ricketts, and Jayden Nelson.

Let's TF-See - Toronto FC's Current Form

Toronto FC are coming off of a 3-2 loss to FC Dallas in their opening match of the season. Despite some positive play from Djordje Mihailovic, Jonathan Osorio and Derrick Etienne Jr., defensive ineptitude primarily contributed to TFC’s defeat.

With a number of defensive players still injured, Robin Fraser will have to rely on a makeshift backline once again. What is troubling is the capability of Vancouver to exploit defensive weaknesses with their build-up play through the midfield and skillful finishing from the forwards.

In order to have a respectable match, players like Walker Zimmerman and Jose Cifuentes will have to shut down the likes of Brian White and Thomas Muller. If not, this game could be a laugher.
