Liverpool 1-1 Brentford: Salah Farewell Ends With Champions League Relief

Liverpool secured Champions League football with a 1-1 draw against Brentford at Anfield, but this was a day shaped less by celebration than farewell. Mohamed Salah made his 442nd and final appearance for the club, while Andy Robertson also said goodbye after 275 games in red.

For Arne Slot, this was a strange full stop to a deeply uneven Premier League campaign. Liverpool, champions in 2024/25, ended this season with only 17 wins from 38 league matches. That tells its own story.

Salah Signs Off With Assist

Salah almost produced the perfect ending after 19 minutes, curling a free-kick against the post. It was close, dramatic and very much in keeping with a player who has so often bent big Liverpool moments to his will.

His final decisive act came in the 58th minute. Salah picked out Curtis Jones, who finished in front of the Kop to put Liverpool 1-0 ahead. It was Salah’s 120th assist for the club, a fitting final contribution from one of the Premier League’s defining forwards.

Brentford Spoil Party Mood

Brentford refused to play the role of sentimental visitors. Kevin Schade had already been denied by an outstanding Alisson save before he equalised just six minutes after Jones’ opener.

For Brentford, the draw was not enough. Their season ended with one win in 10 Premier League matches, leaving them short of European qualification. It will sting, because opportunities like this do not always come around often.

Champions League Secured, Questions Remain

Liverpool got what they needed. Fifth place was confirmed, Champions League football was secured, and Anfield was able to salute Salah and Robertson properly. Salah departed in the 74th minute to an emotional ovation, Robertson followed in the 83rd.

Still, the wider picture demands scrutiny. Liverpool were fragile again after scoring first, and that pattern has defined too much of their season. Slot now has Champions League football as a platform, but also a sizeable rebuild of trust, rhythm and authority ahead.

For Brentford, there is frustration. For Liverpool, there is relief. For Salah and Robertson, there is legacy.
