Tottenham have met West Ham’s £85 million asking price for Mateus Fernandes, triggering a sell-on windfall for former club Southampton.
Sainstmarching.com reports that Southampton will receive about £6.45 million, their 15% share of West Ham’s £43 million profit on the deal.
Fernandes, 21, won Southampton’s Fans’ Player of the Season in 2024/25 despite a 12-point Premier League campaign. He made 46 appearances and scored four goals for the Saints.
Southampton sold him late in the 2025 summer window after he pushed for a move to aid his Portugal World Cup hopes. He missed the final 26-man squad but was shortlisted for the league’s Young Player of the Season.
Interest from Manchester United and Spurs preceded the outcome, with West Ham standing firm and Tottenham moving to complete the deal. The sale doubled West Ham’s outlay inside a year.
On signing, head coach Roberto De Zerbi praised Fernandes’ technique, intensity and decision-making, saying he handles pressure, progresses play and works tirelessly. He added that Spurs provide the ideal environment for the next stage of his development.
For Southampton, the fee almost completely covers the £6.5 million arrival of goalkeeper Daniel Peretz, leaving their summer net spend around -£2.55 million without weakening the squad through sales. With players due back at Staplewood for pre-season, owner Dragan Solak has said recruitment will focus on replacing departures. That currently points to finding a Ross Stewart replacement and an attacker to support Finn Azaz.
